MEETING OF STATES PARTIES
Seventh Meeting
New York, 16 February 1999
Notification of candidatures to the Committee on the Rights
of the Child (article 43, paragraph 4 of the Convention)
The Seventh Meeting of the States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of the Child,
Recalling that, with regard to the election of members of the Committee on the Rights of the Child, article 43, paragraph 4 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child states that "... At least four months before the date of each election, the Secretary-General of the United Nations shall address a letter to States Parties inviting them to submit their nominations within two months. The Secretary-General shall subsequently prepare a list in alphabetical order of all persons thus nominated, indicating States Parties which have nominated them, and shall submit it to the States Parties to the present Convention",
Recognizing the importance of ensuring that the said procedure be scrupulously followed,
1. Expresses appreciation to the Secretary-General for punctually addressing to the Missions of States Parties accredited in New York, where the election is held, the letter inviting States Parties to submit their nominations;
2. Recommends that, on the occasion of future elections of members of the Committee, nominations of candidates be submitted by States Parties to the Convention in accordance with the two-month time period set out in the Convention;
3. Further recommends that the list of all candidates resulting from nominations duly accepted by the Secretary-General, and subsequent withdrawals, be addressed by the Secretary-General, in the same way as the invitation to present candidatures, to the Missions of States Parties accredited in New York, promptly after the established deadline or the withdrawal.
