MEETING OF STATES PARTIES

Sixth meeting

New York, 18 February 1997

Costa Rica: draft resolution

          The States parties to the Convention on the Rights of the Child

          Recalling the relevant amendment to article 43, paragraph 2, of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, adopted by consensus by the Conference of the States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on 12 December 1995,

          Emphasizing that the increase in the membership of the Committee on the Rights of the Child from ten to eighteen members should enable the Committee to carry out its mandate more expeditiously and effectively,

          Noting that, in its resolution 50/155 of 21 December 1995, the General Assembly approved the amendment and urged States parties to take appropriate measures so that acceptance by a two-thirds majority of the States parties could be reached as soon as possible in order for the amendment to enter into force,

          Noting that only a small number of States parties have so far notified the Secretary-General of their acceptance of the amendment,

          Noting that the Committee on the Rights of the Child, at its fourteenth session in January 1997, reiterated its support to the increase of its membership as soon as possible,

          1.       Invite the States parties that have not yet done so to notify the Secretary-General of their acceptance of the amendment to article 43, paragraph 2, of the Convention on the Rights of the Child as a matter of priority;

          2.       Request the Secretary-General to take appropriate measures to encourage States parties to notify their acceptance of the amendment and to report on the status of acceptances of the amendment to the General Assembly at its fifty-second session and to the fifteenth session of the Committee on the Rights of the Child.
